In his series Nests and Shells, With Skirts and Bells, Knapp focuses on three iconic motifs from which the artist derives the form of the objects: nests and shells which are alluded to by the vessel-like nature of the pieces, the "natural edge" rims that associate the vessel from the tree it was cut from, and the tall spindle that raises the bulb of the object above the horizontal where animals frequently make their residence. The third source he draws upon is the shape of mushroom clouds inspired by the images from American nuclear weapons tests.
