These boats were built in the late1800's and the early 1900's to do one thing...that is dredge for oysters. At the time the boat caused a ton of controversey around the entire Chesapeake area. It was thought because they dredged the oyster bars, that said bars would be quickly depleted. They probably did damage the bars, but the increased income from such methods quickly overcame the perceived damage they caused.
