El Capitan and its sister Guadalupe Peak signify the southern terminus of the Guadalupe Mountains and thrusts out over the Salt Flats and the Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas like a fossil prow of an ancient ship in a dead sea.
The peaks were seen by western pioneers following the old Butterfield Overland Mail Road, who were heartened by the sight of the mountains even though they were still days away but the peaks meant water and a resting place after disheartening months of traveling across brutal desert country that claimed many of their lives by thirst, disease and the wilderness many natural perils if the Apaches didnt get to them first. As the peaks grew nearer, El Capitan loomed as if it were the dominant one although Guadalupe Peak is higher, and today El Capitan is the signature peak of West Texas. The original oil comes framed, ready to hang.
