Electric Blue Owl
Beverley Harper Tinsley
Painting - Watercolor And Graphite
Electric Blue Owl
A conversation with a friend:
Friend, "Is that owl on acid?"
Me, "No, it's on a plum."
Now, I can't tell you why I felt compelled to paint a blue owl sitting carefully on a ripe plum. I just did. But if you come up with a deeper, more meaningful or subconscious explanation, please let me know.
What I can tell you:
Owls are among my favorite subjects, They fascinate me with their mysterious appearance, nocturnal activity and long history as a symbol in word mythology and culture.
Owls are a group of birds that belong to the order Strigiformes, constituting 200 extant bird of prey species. Most are solitary and nocturnal, with some exceptions (e.g., the Northern Hawk Owl). Owls hunt mostly small mammals, insects, and other birds, although a few species specialize in hunting fish. They are found in all regions of the Earth except Antarctica, most of Greenland and some remote islands. Though owls are typically solitary, the literary collective noun for a group of owls is a parliament. Owls are characterized by their small beaks and wide faces, and are divided into two families: the typical owls, Strigidae; and the barn-owls, Tytonidae.
This particular, turquoise, indigo and cerulean, little fairyland critter of nature is tiny, but bold. And possibly fierce. Prepared to protect your kitchen or any other room of your house. Gentle enough not to pierce a ripe fruit with its talons. A spirit owl of sorts, who can fit in your pocket. A messenger. A guide.
Some words used to describe this painting are:
