Description
Electric chair. Historical photograph (dated 1908) of a man about to be executed by electric chair. The electric chair was developed in the USA in the 1880s as a humane alternative to hanging. It was first used to execute someone in 1890. Restraining straps are needed as massive convulsions may take place as a lethal amount of electric current is passed through the man's body. This current is passed through wires (seen attached to his head and right leg). Wet cloths are used inside the skullcap and on the leg band, to aid conduction of the current. This man has been blindfolded. The Philippines is the only country outside the USA to use the electric chair.
