Every October, the city of Bacolod, Philippines, celebrate their Annual Masskara Festival. It is a street dancing competition for 3 straight days from the 17th-19th of October. These past recent years, the local government included the electric masskara, a street dancing celebration for 3 straight nights closing the long stretch of the main Lacson street for a big party celebration.
This event was started by a group of local artists led by Ely Santiago (+) when the city was hit hard by the downfall of the Sugar Industry in the 80's. This is their way of boosting the morals of the local people especially when the news hit worldwide about the hunger and poverty felt in this once proud and wealthy Negros Island. Wearing happy masks were a must, to make the locals feel better about themselves, optimistic, and to never lose hope....for tomorrow will be a better day. :)
Since then, the city eagerly awaits this fantastic celebration of where local/national/international artists and photographers converge to showcase their talent in Mask making, body art, costumes, street parade, street dancing & revelry....
I am inviting you to come and visit my place....the City of Smiles, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines.
