Description
Electrochemically etched zinc anode. Scanning electron micrograph showing the erosion of a marine zinc anode. Sometimes called "sacrificial anodes" these units are connected to all other metal structures in contact with the water to protect them from corrosion. Since the anode has a more negative electrochemical potential than the structure it protects, the anode corrodes in preference to that structure. This anode was one of four used on a sea-going boat and protected all the metal parts to which it was attached including the engines, propellors and rudders. Magnification x333 (x80 at 10cm wide).
