This painting is about the quest for spirituality. Exposed to combat and unable to cope with the thoughts and images that war leaves the young soldier with, the mind washes away all dreams and "associations", so that the person can "start fresh". But like pouring alcohol on a wound, everything - good and bad - is expunged.
This was also my personal experience and the loss of my dreams and associations also led to my search for spirituality - as opposed to the Catholic "religion" that I had been a part of in the early stage of my life.
My search goes on. Iraq has re-opened my wounds from the Sixties. I will probably always being looking for the true meaning of things. My painting helps with this journey.
