Color enhanced scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of Enterococci. This type of bacteria is found in the intestines of nearly all vertebrates. Enterococcus hirae (formerly Streptococcus faecalis or faecium) are diplococci and like to lie together in clusters. These bacteria have a high tolerance to variations in pH and the salinity of their environment. They can cause urinary tract infections, wound infections and endocarditis. Magnification 10,000x when printed at 10 cm wide.
