Description
This picture reveals the work of time. In the upper left corner and to the right side you can see Desert Varnish- a mineral buildup on rock that takes over 10,000 years to form. In the middle you can see the intricate patterns worn into the sandstone face resulting from wind and water. This rock face overlooks the Grand Vista trail on top of the Island in the Sky Mesa at Canyonlands National Park in Utah, U.S. The erosion seen here is the same that carves out the grand Arches in nearby Arches National Monument, and throughout this area. These eroded pits are much smaller than those grand monuments- the large one to the right is about the size of a human face.
