Description
DCIM100MEDIA
"Excuse Me! Buckwheat has not been recovered by black people as a positive representation of their reality."
This piece is a painting from my series entited, "Crown and Glory." This series is about a celebration of natural African American hair! It consists of images of several different natural hair styles with negative words (such as buckwheat and ignorant) embedded within them. The words are bringing forward the negativity that is often associated with natural African American hair to the audience and inviting a conversation about the falsehood of the meaning of these words to the subject and their hair. This series is announcing that black hair is beautiful and should be celebrated for its distinctiveness.
*The words embedded within this piece are "Buckwheat" and "Pickaninny."
