Photograph - Photograph
Exhibition of Bell's telephone. Patented in March 1876 by the Scottish-US inventor Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922), this telephone is on display at the Centennial Exposition, the first official World's Fair in the USA. Held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from May to November 1876, it had over 10 million visitors. This artwork is from a series of illustrated French encyclopedia volumes, published by the Epinal printing firm in the late 19th and early 20th century. The series was called 'Serie encyclopedique des lecons de choses illustrees' (Encyclopedic series of object lessons illustrated), and this example is from a volume published in around 1900.
