Eyelashes, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Eyelashes are hairs that grow from the eyelids. They prevent foreign bodies from entering the eye. Hairs grow from follicles in the underlying layer of skin (the dermis), and are mainly composed of the protein keratin.
