Fall River and New Bedford Massachusetts were thriving textile centers in 19th century America. The shells of large five and six story mills still stand today. A testament to early Yankee ingenuity and enterprise. Huge steam powered engines
turned long leather belts connected to looms. Connecting these factories to worldwide markets were the the steamboats of the Fall River Line. Powerful and stable they plied the waters of Long Island Sound between the west side docks of Manhattan, to Newport and Fall River. These steamboats were considered a much pleasanter way to travel than by train. They had the latest amenities such as heated cabins and later incandescent electric lighting. The Plymouth served many years on this route giving reliable passage and a host of good memories.
