Description
This gorgeous five point Rocky Mountain Bull Elk was a satellite bull when this photograph was taken Sept. 20, 2015, in unit 61 on the western slope of Colorado. The foliage was just starting to turn the warm hues of fall, the sun was going down in this valley high in mountains creating a very picturesque scene while the memorable bugles of numerous big bulls resounded through the crisp evening air. A lonely bachelor bull elk like this one is called a satellite bull when he hangs out around the outside edge of the harem of a more dominate bull trying to steal available cows. Satellite bulls are less experienced, more easily bluffed, or weaker for some reason than the dominate herd bull. This does not necessarily mean that they are small or young. They can even be trophy bulls which would rate well on the Boone and Crocket scale in areas like this where there are large numbers of big bulls. These guys are often very vocal and will answer bugles from a long ways away, will sneak in silently and appear suddenly out of seemingly nowhere. And, they are always on the lookout for a lesser bull to challenge for his harem. (Photographed by Tyler Jackson)
