Description
Sperm in uterus. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a human sperm on the inner surface of the uterus, the endometrium. The head of the sperm appears buried in the grass-like ciliated epithelium. Tiny projections or microvilli cover the remaining secretory cells, which provide a moist environment & nutrition to both ova and sperm. Sperm remain incapable of fertilising an ovum until after undergoing capacitation, a process which occurs within the female tract. The close association of the sperm with the ciliated cells in this image may relate to this process. Magnification x4030 at 6x7cm size.
