Beverley Harper Tinsley
Painting - Watercolor And Graphite
Let's face it. I love painting colorful owls. There is something so very satisfying about guiding those bright, rich colors as they drip, merge, blend and change into something beautiful and original, compete with what is planned, what is unexpected and even what is charmingly flawed. I feel at peace, taking the risk of not trying to control every aspect of the work, a sort of wabi sabi approach.
I am an opportunistic painter, toting my materials around with me, and seeking to make use of my time. This painting was begun at my parents house, continued during my daughters karate class, and finally finished at St. Marks Coffee House. It has a soft and almost ethereal expression, in contrast with the dramatic, over the top colors of the plumage, and brings a cheerful, but peaceful and relaxed energy to the space it inhabits. It says, "Just be who you are." As I continue with my series of owls, each takes on its own character and personality, and different owls speak to different people. Is this the one that speaks to you?
On the original, when observed carefully, a subtle silver sheen becomes visible in the eyes and the background atmosphere, lending a cool note to all the hot, vibrant colors of the subject.
