Description
This photograph of a female cardinal was taken in a tree in front of my house after a beautiful snowfall.
The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is a North American bird in the genus Cardinalis; it is also known as the common cardinal. The female bird has a red hue to its feathers, but the main color of the female of the species is a burgundy brown. The female cardinal has a bright beak and is orange with red tones. The female species has a lighter black or brown mask that barely covers the eyes and rarely meets under the beak but rather ends at the top of the beak. The female cardinal, usually more fat than the male.
Cardinals whether they are male or female are songbirds and have an interesting whistle type call. Cardinals do not molt so they do not need to migrate during the winter. I hope you have enjoyed this photograph and will share it with others. You can see more of my work on my home page. Thank you for visiting and please stop by again as I add to the various galleries.

What a lovely capture! I ordinarily see the all-red males in photos, so this is a treat for me! F/V.
