The Kiel Fjord (Danish: Kiel Fjord and Kiel fjord) is a 17 km long, narrow fjord on the Baltic Sea, which is caused by glacier movements in the last ice age. It lies between the Danish Wahld landscapes and Wagrien. In Kiel Neumhlen the Schwentine joins the Kiel Fjord. In the Kiel Fjord is also the eastern entrance and exit into the North Sea-Baltic Canal, which connects North and Baltic Sea for the international shipping and saves the detour around the Jutland Peninsula. At the narrowest point is the fjord which forms a natural deep water harbor, 1 km wide (Friedrichsorter narrow) - where the funding was secured through the fortress Friedrichsort. The Kiel Fjord extends from the horn in the center of the city of Kiel to the outer fjord, which merges into the Bay of Kiel.
