Colorful figurehead on replica pirate ship in George Town harbor, Grand Cayman.
A figurehead is a carved wooden decoration found at the prow of ships, popular during the 16th and 19th centuries. Quite a bit of meaning and superstition was attached to these artful, colorful, decorative carvings. Since they are no longer in popular usage they are valuable as antique and collectibles.
