Firefighting Engine Company No. 1 - Nevada City Montana Ghost Town
In the old west, fires must have been catastrophic as most everything was constructed, initially, with wood. Therefore, fire fighting evolved rapidly from ogranized bucket brigades to dedicated fire fighting crews with the latest equipment of the times.
Here in Nevada City Montana ghost town Fire Engine Company No. 1, we see part of the old west fire house as it probably appeared in its day. At the rear on the left appears to be a horse-drawn Fire Ladder Wagon. On the right is an 1870's era horse-drawn, steam powered Fire Wagon. In the front, appears to be a personal-sized, hand pumped water fire extinguisher.
These were state of the art fire fighting apparatus of a bygone era. And, when fire did break out ... the community and former bucket brigade members were grateful when Engine Company NO. 1 arrived on the scene.
