First Shot Monument Gettysburg
Photograph - Photograph
This monument next to the road on Knoxlyn Ridge between Cashtown and Gettysburg marks the site where the first shot of the Battle of Gettysburg was fired. Historians generally agree that the shot was fired by Lt (later Captain) Marcellus Jones of Company E of the 8th Illinois Cavalry of the Union Army at 7.30am on 1st July, 1863, using a rifle belonging to Corporal Levi S. Shafer. Jones returned to the site in 1886 when the monument was erected.
