Description
Flood defence model of Venice, Italy. Venice is a city on an island in a coastal lagoon. The entire 550-square-kilometre lagoon (pale green) is seen on the laptop display. The sea (blue) can cause severe floods, due to winds and tides, which are predicted to worsen due to land subsidence and global warming. The lagoon model, seen through the windows, recreates the complicated topography of mud flats and channels. A variety of defences, part of the MOSE project, are tested on the model. The main defence will be moveable barriers across the sea inlets to the lagoon. Photographed in Padova in 2003.
