Painting - Encaustic
The word "encaustic" means "to burn in" and was first used more than 5,000 years ago, when the ancient Greeks and Romans used melted hot beeswax as a carrier medium for natural pigments they obtained from the ground and rocks. The medium, called "encaustic bricks" and "encaustic cans" can be purchased in many art supplies stores or via Internet. There is a big collection of wonderful colors. I can't resist buying lots of bricks and cans every time I go to my art supplies store, but I also love to make my own small personal encaustic brick collection using beeswax that I extract from our backyard hives. It's a fun experience that I enjoy by the end of each summer, when the bees finish their honey production.
