Description:
Fódla was the daughter of Ernmas of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Her husband was Mac Cecht, one of the three High Kings of Ireland before the Milesian invasion. As part of a peaceful surrender of Ireland to the Milesians, the three sisters, Fódla, Ériu, and Banba, requested that the land be named after them. Ériu became the most popularly used name: Eire/Erin=Ireland, while Fódla and Banba were often used as poetic names for the country.
This painting is a combination of glaze-work and stroke-work. Since Fódla was believed to be a goddess of the earth, I used an earth-based object as inspiration for this painting. The reference is a close-up view of the patina on a bronze statue.
