Painting - Oil On Masonite Panel
Ground Fog above Snow
Air above snow cover experiences strong radiational cooling at night; and here, it chilled to the dew point. Ground fog formed in a shallow layer above the snow -- between 4 and 12 feet thick. Light winds advected (carried) the fog across roadways adjacent to large fields, a combination of radiation and advection fog which caused a sudden driving hazard. This fog lasted up to two hours after sunrise each morning for several days after a 10-inch snowfall, until most of it had melted away. Within minutes, as the colors of a chilly sunrise became warmer, a uniquely Indiana scene emerged from the snow fog farther SE!
