In the central plaza of the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Florida, is a new monument to the "Foot Soldiers". Violent attacks on Foot Soldiers for civil rights in St. Augustine was broadcast on national television news night after night in 1964. This led to the end of the filibuster by Republicans in the Senate, and opened the way to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Now, decades later, St. Augustine is honoring the people who used non-violent direct action to advance justice and freedom for people of all races in the United States.
