Color enhanced micrograph of a collection of Foraminifera, an order of marine single-celled protozoa in the phylum Sarcodina, whose shells are the main ingredient of chalk. In previous geological ages Foraminifera occurred in such large numbers that their shells, made of calcium carbonate, have formed large fossil deposits that we call limestone.
