Description:
Phoenix is surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks and lakes. This view of one of its more signature outcrops, was painted after driving east from Scottsdale beyond the outlying suburbs. The beauty of Arizona is well described by these hills and the desert floor that leads to them. I found a quiet spot off the road that afforded a clear and direct view of the mountain and made certain that saguaro cacti framed my composition.The saguaro cactus is protected here given its majesty and ecological role in the high altitude environment.
This triband composition of sky, depth of field and foreground, resolved very well despite the hot conditions. The fluid manner of paint application is in sync with early impressionistic technique, especially that of Alfred Sisley, a painter from which I draw unconsciously. Quantities of cobalt towards the end behaves like filtered light through the undergrowth in foreground and this is complimented by a simple horizon line and typical Arizona sky.
