Francis L. McIntosh, a free mulatto boatman, killed St. Louis's deputy sheriff, George Hammond, while resisting arrest. Twenty men, including some prominent citizens, removed him from the jail, chained him to a tree, and slowly burned him to death. Illustrations of the Antislavery Almanac for 1840.
