Revolutionary-era Fort Griswold, Groton, CT.
The American flag flies proudly and solemnly from this grassy old-stone perch overlooking the Thames River. Here the blood of patriots was heavily spilled when the British overtook the fort during the Battle of Groton Heights. A fitting place to reflect, as this poem does, on America's richly symbolic, iconic and ever-alluring colors.
