Description
Taken in October 8, 2006 during a visit of Thousand Island tour. It is a landmark in Gananoque, Ontario
Edited from Waymarking.com on Gananoque Clock tower
The Gananoque Clock tower, which is 85 feet high was presented to the town by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Macdonald. Charles Macdonald was the great grandson of Col. Joel Stone, the founder of Gananoque. The clock was built in the memory of his father, William Stone Macdonald, who passed away in 1902 at the Blinkbonnie, the family home. Charles Macdonald, born in Gananoque, was an eminent bridge builder in the United States and Canada. In his latter years he resided in Blinkbonnie, and died there in 1928.
This tower is one of the Gananoque's most visible buildings, as it is located not far from the harborfront - the center of tourist area. The structure was designed by Frank T. Lent, an architect from Boston, who was living here at the time. The tower was built by a local firm, Mitchell and Wilson Company. The four-faced clock was the best that could be procured. It was manufactured by the Seth Thomas Company in the United States. The Clock Tower stands on the edge of the property once known as Market Square. The clock not only provided the time for people travelling in all four directions, but also, through the use of special code, rang out fire alarms for all the town to hear.
