Description
The Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a crocodilian of the family Gavialidae that is native to the Indian subcontinent and is also called the gavial and fish-eating crocodile. Look into his eyes and see that he longs for a place to call home, Gharials once thrived in all the major river systems of the Indian subcontinent, spanning the rivers of its northern part from the Indus River in Pakistan across the Gangetic floodplain to the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar. Today, they are extinct in the Indus River, in the Brahmaputra of Bhutan and Bangladesh, and in the Irrawaddy River. Their distribution is now limited to only 2% of their former range. According to IUCN, there has been a population decline of 96- 98% over a three-generation period since 1946, and the once widespread population of an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 individuals has been reduced to a very small number of widely spaced sub-populations of fewer than 235 individuals in 2006. Currently, is listed as Critically Endangered by IUCN. Fine Art America watermark will not appear on purchased artwork.
