Description
Ghost Flower, better known as Indian Pipe is a flower that looks like it should be grouped with mushrooms and other fungi. This flower that resembles a species of fungi has no chlorophyll, thus needs no sunlight to grow and is not green. The plant feeds on fungi that feed on decaying wood. So dark, often damp forests are where these flowers are found. Some say it has been called the “ice plant” because it looks frozen and “melts when handled. The plant is used as an herbal medicine, as it possesses antispasmodic and sedative properties. A tea made from the roots is used as a remedy for spasms, fainting spells, muscle spasms, convulsions and epilepsy. Native Americans made an eye salve from the plant.
