Description
Pan was the demigod of shepherds and flocks in Greek mythology. It was especially venerated in Arcadia, despite not having large sanctuaries in his honor in that region. In Roman mythology, this god is identified as a Faun.
Pan was also the god of fertility and male sexuality. Endowed with great power and sex drive, he was dedicated to pursuing the woods, looking for her favors, nymphs and boys. In many respects, the god Pan has some similarity to Dionysus.
He was the god of the winds of sunrise and sunset. He lived with the nymphs in a grotto called Coriciana Parnassus. They were attributed prophetic gifts and was part of the retinue of Dionysus, since it was assumed that he was following in his ways. He was a hunter, healer and musician. He lived in the forests and jungles, running after the sheep and scaring the men who penetrated their land.
He carried in the hand or crook shepherd's staff and played the syrinx, which is also known as the Pan Flute. He liked the fountains and the shade of forests, among which weeds used to hide to spy on the nymphs.
It is said that Pan was especially irascible if he is bothered during his naps. The people of Arcadia had the belief that when a person was taking a nap, wake up not owed for any reason because, that way, the dream of Pan was interrupted. In this case, Pan approaches the notion of Demonium Meridianum.
Finally, as a deity, Pan represented all the wild. Thus it was attributed generation maddening fear. Hence the word panic in principle meant fear suffering massive herds and flocks to the thunder and lightning.
