(OK, so you've met my dad...ha-ha!) Really impressive work. I admire your ability to capture the soul of a being as well as this high degree of realism - you express a great deal of emotion through your linework. Great job!

Dear Marlene, I hereby use this totally incredible colored pencil work to once and for all, make my ultimate stance that colored pencil works are every bit a total quality, fine art media as much so as acrylic paint or oil paint, and any other media and with this piece that you here exhibit, I hereby use as the proof of all proofs as my defence in the matter ! I hereby rest my case !

AMAZING! And this is color pencil work. The mystery you captured in the expression on the gorilla's face is wonderful - can't help anthopromorphizing and wondering what he/she's thinking.

Having joined fairly recently I am late to view this drawing and having done so hesitated to add yet another comment to the praise already given. But the talent demonstrated here fairly demands comment. Well done! You spark my envy and admiration.

Thanks for the compliment. The gaze is "just off" because a direct stare is interpreted as a sign of aggression and most gorillas will not return a stare, especially in captivity as this one is, unless provoked. They will purposely look just away, keeping you in their peripheral vision. But I agree that it would have made for a meaner, scarier look.

Thanks Pete! This is a zoo gorilla. I tried to show, in his expression, the essense of a captive wild animal. Thanks for commenting.

Thank you Barbara. And yes, this is my first adventure with color pencil. Picked it for first color because of the limited palette. The scan (as everybody knows) is not as good as the original, but that's the price we pay for posting on the internet...
