Description
Spheroidal weathering. View of rounded granite rocks in the Mojave Desert. The rounding has been caused by a type of chemical weathering known as spheroidal weathering. This is a process where rainwater erodes the rock's outer layers by chemically reacting with the rock (hydrolysis). This results in the rock becoming less resistant to physical erosion. The rain water will then wash away the outer layers of rock, leaving the rounded boulders. Photographed in California, USA.
