Description
Chicxulub crater. Coloured gravity anomaly map showing the extent of the Chicxulub impact crater in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The Chicxulub crater was formed by an asteroid impact about 65 million years ago, and may have contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs. The crater rim is seen as the larger green, yellow and red ring, and is about 180km in diameter. The white line indicates the coast; land is in the lower half of the frame. The map shows the difference between the measured gravity in small areas, caused by deep concentrations of rock, compared to the general gravity for the whole region.
