I really am impressed with your work Rachel. I have found that gouache is an excellent medium especially in commercial commissions because of the opacity. It is far more convenient than oil because of the drying time and that is important when clients want something done by tomorrow morning. I also prefer gouache with airbrush because of the flat finish. I admire your drawing ability which makes me believe you would probably be good with pen and ink.
Rachel Root replied:
Thank you very much! Gouache is really great because of the drying time although I work with oils as well on some large pieces and prefer it to acrylic because I like to blend and the slow drying time allows that. I actually start every piece with a very detailed pen drawing that I then trace onto the watercolor paper. I find it to be the most important step when doing these because it gives me a strong base to start painting on. I paint in very thin layers and it can be very unforgiving in terms of corrections so a very accurate and detailed start is important for me.
