Great Lakes Freighter
Photograph - Photographs
A nostalgic soft focus black and white photograph of the self loading Great Lakes barge, the Mckee Sons. Originally built in the 1940's as a troop carrier named the Marine Angel, she was later retrofitted as a Great Lakes freighter in the 1950's. Her retrofit included lengthening of 123 feet! She steamed the lakes until 1979 and then sat idle in port until 1991 when she was converted to a barge (she now needs a tug and has no power of her own). The pilot house show in this photo is actually that of her tug, the Invincible which resides in a notch in the back of Mckee Son's hull.
