Green Sea Turtle II
Painting - Watercolor On Paper
The green sea turtle, also known as the green turtle, black turtle, or Pacific green turtle, is a large turtle whose range extends throughout tropical and subtropical seas around the world. The name comes from the usually green fat found beneath its shell. It is considered the only herbivorous sea turtle with adults typically inhabiting shallow lagoons, feeding mostly on various sea grasses.
Like other sea turtles, green sea turtles migrate long distances between feeding grounds and hatching beaches. Many islands worldwide are known as Turtle Island due to green sea turtles nesting on their beaches. Females crawl out on beaches, dig nests and lay eggs during the night. Later, hatchlings emerge and scramble into the water. Those that reach maturity may live to eighty years in the wild.
The Green Sea Turtle is listed as endangered and is protected from exploitation in most countries. It is illegal to collect, harm or kill them. In spite of protection efforts, human action presents intentional and unintentional threats to the species' survival. Intentional threats include continued hunting, poaching and egg harvesting. More dangerous are unintentional threats, including boat strikes, fishermen's nets, pollution and habitat destruction. An infectious tumor-causing disease is also a problem in some populations. The disease kills a sizeable number of those infected. Because of these threats, many populations are in a vulnerable state. A portion of the revenue for sales of this piece are donated to sea turtle rescue and research.
