Description
Holland Michigan’s beautiful Lake Michigan beachfront is divided by a channel that connects Lake Macatawa to Lake Michigan. Ottawa Beach is on the north side of the channel and the iconic Big Red lighthouse is on the south side. Both sides of the channel have piers which jettison out into Lake Michigan to tame the turbulent inland sea to help incoming boats safely enter the channel to head home to Tiara Yachts and beyond. On a cold October day I was in the shadow of Big Red with my Plaubel Makina camera aimed at the south side pier. I was very determined to capture the grandeur of the gale driven waves crashing against the pier as seagulls bravely hovered above sharp rocks that, with the help of the gale winds, were bringing forth a late afternoon snack of fresh fish. I stood at the end of a concrete jetty with foaming waves bathing my Sorel clad feet and waited 45 minutes for the planets to align and waves, gulls, clouds, and sun to be at just the right spot. It was all worth the trouble.
