Description
IUD contraceptive. Hand holds a GyneFIX IntraUter- ine Device (IUD) used in contraception. This IUD consists of 6 copper rings on a thread which is implanted in the muscle at the top of a woman's uterus (the fundal myometrium). The device is anchored in the myometrium by the knot at lower right. The thread hangs through the cervix, making it easy to remove. GyneFIX's design makes it unlikely to irritate surrounding tissue or be accidentally expelled. IUDs are thought to work by interfering with the implantation of a fertilised egg in the uterus. The GyneFIX is replaced about once every five years. Users of GyneFIX have a yearly pregnancy rate of only about 0.5%.
