Painting - Oil On Canvas
This is a painting about the dignity of the old age. The subject imposed itself after this model responded to my ad and on his first visit we tried several sitting poses and different light conditions. I was looking for more dramatic division of light and shadows in facial features and this angle provided that. The secondary focal point has been created with the model's hands. It was my intention to raise them from the level of the table and join them as combined mass. Cane served that purpose well and provided dynamic diagonal that broke horizontal continuation of the table top and arms. Interesting overlapping has been accomplished with the still life elements and the left arm. Design of the drapery and chromatic changes of the drapery brought more interest in the lover part of the painting without taking much from the face and hands. Another purpose of the drapery and stripes is foreshortening of the table top surface. Chromatic darks harmonize well with the rest of the model's clothes. Slight shift in pose with the weight distributed to the right elbow produced the variety of asymmetrical angles of the shoulder area. Rimless glasses are fine detail that brings additional refinement in the facial area and very controlled reflections that are easy to relate to the highlights in glass and the bottle. The painting represents the scene in real sizes and consequently the size of the canvas arrived to the actual format that can envelope the whole subject with interesting negative areas.
