Manzanita Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in Lassen Volcanic National Park, lies in the extreme northwest portion of the park.
It was born only 300+ years ago, when the northeast dome of Chaos Crags collapsed in a cold air-cushioned incredibly fast (100 miles an hour) rock avalanche. The rockfall dammed Manzanita Creek, creating Manzanita Lake.
The high-alpine mountain lake is surrounded by dense, wildlife-rich forests, provides exceptional fly fishing on a catch and release basis and is prime bird-watching territory. Its not a place for those seeking solitude, but very pretty nevertheless.
