Harvesting Sugar Cane
Painting - Oil On Canvas
I remember tasting sugar cane for the first time as a child and watching it being ground down and its pulp pressed to extract the juice. The cane itself was sweet, gritty and it tasted a lot like soggy wood. I remember the scythe they used to cut down the stalk. It was hard, hot, and dirty work. I don't think many people know how much work goes into making raw sugar, but it made an impression on me.
