Dresden is located in former Communist East Germany (GDR), just a short distance from Poland. Hausmannsturm (German: Hausmann Tower) is the main tower of Dresden's Royal palace complex. Like all landmarks in Dresden, the Royal Palace was destroyed in 1945.
The total destruction of everything except its outer walls nearly provided the perfect excuse for ideologically motivated demolition. Had the Hausmann Tower not stood so close to the Court Church, it would have been blown up as early as 1945 or 1946. Restauration did not seriously gather momentum until the 1990s, when the tower regained its peak.
The Housemann Tower is still one of Dresden's most striking buildings. Climb up the 222 stairs and enjoy a fantastic view of the city. It has a viewing platform, from where visitors have a great view over Dresden's historic center.
