Description:
I hold a special fondness for Hawaii, truly a paradise on earth. Not only for the natural beauty of the Islands, or the perfect weather, but for the special people living there who have touched my heart deeply.
This painting was done using Chinese Spontaneous Style painting techniques. Spontaneous Style of painting is sometimes referred to Scholar Style and comes from the practice of calligraphy and poetry, which the ancient Chinese scholars studied. A true scholar mastered the three perfections of theory, poetry and calligraphy (and/or painting) because the three were inseparable. The purpose of this style of painting is not to copy nature in perfect detail, but to reinterpret and capture its essence. As a result spontaneous style has manipulated and abbreviated brushstrokes, and can sometimes be nearly abstract in execution and expression.
I find this style of painting the most satisfying and the most challenging. The challenge for me in spontaneous style is not so much in capturing the essence of nature, but in not getting too caught up in detail. Sometimes, the paint leaves blooms or other random effects that I must resist smoothing out and clean up. (My detail-oriented mind wants desperately to go back and fix these "mistakes".) The purpose of the painting is balancing the subtle details with the spontaneous nature of the ink and paint.
I chose these Hawaiian fish because of my fond memories of snorkeling the waters around Maui and for the emotional connection to one of my favorite persons who lives there.
