Description:

Hehaka Pejuta is a Lakota term meaning 'Elk Medicine'. I've a wealth of written material (too lengthy for this space) about this painting, which has several layers of meaning. There are two kinds of deer medicine. One is positive, embodying the qualities of leadership, caring for one’s mate and protecting the community, knowing when to speak, when to hold one’s tongue. This painting depicts the other opposite aspect of deer medicine. Like ghosts, deer materialize from leafy shadows along the forest periphery in the early dawn or late evening. Traditional Lakota describe deer spirits manifesting as charismatic humans of both genders. Mortals possessing the deer medicine possess the same powers of attraction and control over the opposite sex as deer during the mating season. When Deer crosses your path, approach with caution, for his perfume is primal and alluring. Deer’s low, silent voice says things that are good to hear, like the laughing whisper of cottonwood leaves. These are quiet men, moving with stealth and watchfulness like antlered bucks in the brush. You’ll feel comfortable and relaxed, but a hint of danger makes meeing him a little exciting, you'll anticipate meeting him or her again. His memory clings like sticky web yet exactly what he said or why it’s so intriguing, one can’t recall. This is because deer sprits work in shadows and whispers, half truths and suppositions, misleading the victim this way and that until she can't find her way clearly in the woods (no longer listens to her own judgement) When you notice this symptom, heed the warning of forgetfulness induced by soft words, perfume of warm, moist breath scented by fresh tender shoots and fragrant grasses. A deer spirit always announces its intent, though like the animal itself watchful in the underbrush, the warning will be masked. Deer’s words are reverse of its intent, as in a mirror’s reflection. Listen, be aware! The spirit says only once who and what it is. Run! Don’t forget yourself and who you are. Look away from those liquid, dark mirrored orbs, for the bottomless eyes of deer spirits snare souls, leaving an open window between the bones of one’s chest. WANT YOUR PRINT SIGNED PERSONALLY? servus fugitvus....always one step, one instant ahead of the hunter....the poor hunter climbs the hill where he is certain the racked-trophy is grazing; only to reach the top and see on the next hill, the longed for pray......in any event, that is only one of the many attachments to the racked-woodland-diety.....your space and the storyful image are wonderful and i hope to see more of your works. tdp
