Description
Equestrian bronze statue of King Henry IV of France on Square du Vert-Galant on the Pont-Neuf in Paris. The bronze statue of the horse was made in Florence and offered by the Granduke of Tuscany Cosimo II dei Medici (Cosme II de Médicis) to his daughter Maria. It was supposed to hold a statue of Ferdinand of Tuscany. The ship transporting the statues to Paris sank and only the horse was recovered. It was set where it is now only in 1614 and without knight. In 1634 a statue of king Henri IV was placed on the Florentine horse but it was then melted in 1792 to make guns, so the horse remained without knight again. The present statue was made during the Restoration and is by Lemot (1818), who a legend says having hidden, as a fierce Bonapartiste, some antimonarchist libels and a small statue of Napoleon inside the statue.
